Move over Sandy-Jennifer Aniston is poised to become America's newest big-screen sweetheart
By Stephen Schaefer
IN her new movie, Picture Perfect, Jennifer Aniston plays a sassy lovelorn cutie who fakes her engagement in, well, a While You Were Sleeping kind of way. She stammers and charms her way into the heart of the good guy--and the audience--much as Sandra Bullock did two years ago. Comparisons between the two are inevitable: as if it weren't enough that both actresses are perky, non-threatening brunettes, Aniston is currently dating Bullock's ex-boyfriend, actor Tate Donovan (best known as the voice of Disney's Hercules). And now that Bullock's Speed 2: Cruise Control has drifted into the sunset, it might be time for America's reigning ingenue to pass the torch to America's favorite Friend.
No one could accuse Aniston of not being ready for her first big-screen lead. The twenty-eight-year-old daughter of soap-opera star John Aniston has always worked hard for what she wants. She was the first of the Friends cast to juggle film work while shooting the series, playing small roles in She's the One and 'Til There Was You. After her dad showed her the Picture Perfect script--co-written by his friend Arleen Sorkin--20th Century Fox bought her the property, and hired Moonlighting vet Glenn Gordon Caron to direct.
Like Aniston herself, Picture Perfect's Kate Mosley is a career girl with her eye on the prize. When she learns that her irresponsible lifestyle is frowned upon by her superiors at work, she hires nice-guy Nick (Jay Mohr) to stand in as her fiancé. Although Nick falls in love with her, Kate can't resist regular meetings between the sheets with a caddish colleague (Kevin Bacon). She's not exactly the girl next door; more like the chick who's been around the block a few times--a Mary Tyler Moore for the nineties.
On a hot summer afternoon in New York City, Jennifer Aniston is quite cool in a tan suede skirt with a nifty little slit on the side, matching Prada shoes, and an off-white top, sipping a Diet Coke on her hotel sofa. You'd never guess that her first big movie opening is imminent, and that she worked very late last night wrapping her lead in Nicholas Hytner's The Object of My Affection, one of the most coveted female roles in recent memory. As she talks about her new movie, her show, her man, and her hair--it's clear that she's got this star thing down.
