Tell me about your worst date.
I've always kind of had a good time on dates. But I didn't date a lot. I've never really gone out on dates.

You're dating Matt Dillon now. Is it different, going out with somebody who's famous too? Does that make the relationship more complicated, or does it make things easier?
I think he totally understands the work. We both know what it is to be on a set. We both know how hard it is, what dedication it takes. He's been dealing with this for fifteen years. To him, it's just part of his daily life. He deals with it very well. So, I guess it does help having somebody who knows what the pressures are.

How did you guys meet? On a movie?
We were both doing films in Minnesota. He was doing Beautiful Girls and I was doing Feeling Minnesota.

And you met in a karaoke bar?
Wouldn't that be a fairy-tale story! [Laughs.] No, we met there for the first time. But it wasn't until a year later that we went out.

Did somebody set you up or was it like a wrap party?
No, he called me.

Just out of the blue?
Yeah.

But I thought you said you don't date?
I'm saying that I've never spent years dating guys, trying to find [the one]. I was in a relationship for five years [with video producer Carlos de La Torre], so that took me from the age of seventeen to twenty-two. Those are the years you might expect someone to date, and I wasn't.

Do you think you'll get married at some point?
Eventually, I think that I'll be married and have children and stuff. But I can't say who or where or how or what would lead up to that.

Tell me about A Life Less Ordinary, the film you recently shot with Ewan McGregor and [Trainspotting director] Danny Boyle. Who do you play?

I'm Celine. She's a gal who's hell-bent on torturing her father, in doing whatever she can to make his life miserable because when she was twelve, she was kidnapped and he took six weeks to pay the ransom. He's a real jerk. Ian Holm is the father.

Who does Ewan play?
Ewan plays a janitor in my father's company who loses his job to a robot. He loses his job, his apartment, and his girlfriend all in the same day, so he goes to take revenge. I'm in the office being punished for something I've done; Ewan comes in and he ends up kidnapping me. Very shortly after, I realize he doesn't know what he's doing. So I decide, "Oh well, I guess we could get a few bucks out of this. Why don't I teach him a thing or two and maybe we can get some money from my dad and all my problems will be over with."

Do you guys fall in love then?
Yes.

I saw Danny Boyle at the Independent Spirit Awards and he was about to screen the film for the first time. Have you heard how that went?

I saw a really rough cut and it's fun. What I like about it is the love story, it's really romantic. And Holly Hunter and Delroy Lindo are also in it. They are fantastic; they play angels.

Angels?
It's kind of complicated. I don't know; it's kind of hard to explain.

You're at a different point in your career than Julia Roberts. Is there anything you learned from her, just from watching her on the set?

One thing I realized from Julia--which I knew before, but was made very clear--is that when you're the star of the film, the crew looks to you to set the tone of everyday work. So when you come into work, whatever it is that you're giving off, that is what the tone is going to be for the working conditions.

And what kind of tone did she set?
Oh, she kept everybody laughing. Lots of jokes and lots of contact with the crew, all that good stuff.

So you learned that it works best if you keep it light and not make it all Sturm und Drang?
Exactly.
